We really start to meet Barley from Chapter 26 when they share the train journey south. In Chapter 27 there is a curious sentence to describe Barley

“it could have been the face of an angel, or maybe a monk in a Northumbrian cloister”.

Odd that there should be the reference to Northumberland and its ancient christianity. For it was up here at Ad Gefrin that thousands were baptised in the dark ages.
