We first come across the Sultan Mehmed II in Chapter 7 when Paul was reading from Lord Gelling’s History of Central Europe. He refers to the night attack when Vlad attacked the Sultan’s camp at night in an attempt to kill him.

Ragusa – Dubrovnik – The Historian
“When my father went south again, he took me with him” – page 24, Chapter 3
“An Ivory city with a molten sunlit sea breaking around its walls, roofs redder than the evening sky inside their tremendous medieval enclosure. The city sat on a large round peninsular, and its walls looked impenetrable.”
The reference to red roofs brought to mind Dubrovnik as shown in this wikimedia image.
To quote from Wikipedia
“The Republic of Ragusa or Republic of Dubrovnik was a maritime republic centered on the city of Dubrovnik (Ragusa in Italian and Latin) in Dalmatia (today in southernmost modern Croatia), that existed from 1358 to 1808.”

Emona – The Historian
“I’ll call it Emona, its Roman name”. Page 7.
This is where the story starts and it is in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia that we begin. The city has the dragon as its symbol and it was in 50 BCE that the Romans built their first encampment. We won’t see the City again but it is in many ways a good place to start. Behind the old iron curtain and yet close to Italy, Germany and Austria.
“There’s the castle, my father said“.
This picture shows the view from the castle walls.
And here is a larger picture of the dragon courtesy of Stewart Morris
